UK weather forecast: Britain will be pounded by heavy rains as an Atlantic storm strikes

The rest of the month will likely bring heavy rain and colder temperatures to the United Kingdom, signaling a shift in weather fortunes.

Showers will hit several regions of the UK starting on Saturday, April 23, with rain concentrating on the Scotland-England border by Monday. As the week progresses, the total precipitation will increase, peaking at just about 4cm in southern Scotland and the northeastern corner of England.

The figure for total rainfall in the east and south-east will be closer to 35mm, with 20mm in the southwest and 25mm in the Plymouth area.

The Midlands will get milder rains, while the central-eastern part of England will be spared the worst of the rain.

The total cumulative precipitation in Wales varies between 21mm and 29mm, and the highlands of Scotland will remain relatively dry compared to the rest of the UK.

In the aftermath of the warm Easter bank holiday weekend, Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, predicted that “much greater” downpours will impact the UK.

A “new frontal system” moving in from the west, according to Mr. Dale, will lay the stage for a rainy conclusion to an otherwise “lovely” April.

He predicts that the bank holiday weekend’s “mostly settled” and “uneventful weather” “won’t stay forever.”

There may be “extremes” of weather conditions, such as rainfall, within this.

The “cold Atlantic airstream,” he told Express.co.uk, might bring “even thunder-type showers” to UK beaches, advancing inland as the days progressed.

The rain will arrive with “no heatwaves,” with hot, bright spells not seen in the UK “for the rest of April,” as “temperatures fall off.”

The Met Office predicts rain in the region starting this weekend due to “thickening” clouds in the extreme south of the UK.

They forecast that the rain will “look to shift northwards with time” as we approach May.

After the warm Easter weekend, this will hold both the northeastern and northwesterly regions “drier for the longest.”
