Ukraine’s fightback against Russian aggression takes place not just on the battlefield, but also in the courtroom.

Testimony is being gathered and evidence is being compiled across this devastated country for a purpose that may not come until long after the guns have fallen silent: international justice.

Iryna Venediktova, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, who was appointed two years ago as the first woman to fill the position, is leading the charge.

This Monday, she witnessed the exhumation of another mass grave beneath a gold-domed church in Bucha, where the darkest of sins were revealed – this time, ten victims, some completely burnt. Their bodies were packed in corpse bags and hauled away for identification purposes.

She told me that more than 6,000 cases of war crimes had already been opened as she stood at the brink of the deep abyss.

“Many people talk about the extermination of the Ukrainian people,” she continued, “and we do have grounds to talk about genocide.” “Vladimir Putin is the president of the aggressor country in Ukraine, which is slaughtering civilians. He’s the one in charge.”
