Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, has urged for a cease-fire in Ukraine ahead of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.

Although Guterres characterised his talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as “frank,” he believes that he is in Moscow to serve as a “messenger of peace.”

It comes after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of a “real” potential of World War Three erupting.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, disputed this, saying Lavrov is merely attempting to “frighten the world away from backing Ukraine.”

And UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said he does not believe a threat of escalation is imminent.

On the other hand, Heappey says he favours Ukrainian forces striking targets within Russian territory in order to disrupt supply lines.

New explosions have been reported in Transnistria, a Moldovan breakaway province bordering Ukraine.
