Every year on April 18th, the world celebrates International Monuments and Sites Day. It’s also called World Heritage Day.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Paris organises this global event.

Its purpose is to inspire local communities and people to value cultural heritage. The day also aims to raise awareness about cultural heritage diversity and vulnerability, as well as preservation efforts.

History and significance

ICOMOS suggested in 1982 that April 18 be declared International Monuments and Sites Day.

The next year, UNESCO’s 22nd General Conference declared the date a global event. Since then, ICOMOS has proposed a topic for this day.

Theme

“Heritage and Climate” is the theme for 2022. ICOMOS has asked its members, people, and organisations to organise activities.

This year’s theme addresses climate justice and equity while protecting heritage. It’s also an opportunity to explore how to safeguard vulnerable groups fairly.

“This day provides a timely opportunity to showcase strategies to promote the full potential of heritage conservation research and practice to deliver climate-resilient pathways to strengthen sustainable development while advocating for just transitions to low-carbon futures,” ICOMOS said.
