13 teenagers arrested in Egypt for harassing female tourists

The public prosecutor of Egypt ruled on Monday that 13 young males arrested over the weekend and suspected of harassing two female visitors at the Giza Pyramids near Cairo be held in jail awaiting an investigation.
The arrests happened when a video showed a horde of males gathering around two young ladies at the famed ancient site, one of Egypt’s top tourist attractions, appeared on social media.
The lads can be seen jeering at the women and pressing up against them as they try to flee. One woman turns and pushes a boy away. The video does not show if any of the lads molested the women.
According to the chief prosecutor’s office, a tour guide who recorded the event on his smartphone accused the adolescents of “verbally and physically” abusing the women, which they deny.
The video sparked fury on social media in this Muslim-majority country where sexual harassment and misbehavior are common, ranging from catcalls to occasional pinching or groping in public.
The accused lads are between the ages of 13 and 15, according to the prosecutor’s office. The message had no information on the female travelers.
If charged, the lads will face a juvenile court.
Visitors visiting Egypt’s famed archaeological monuments, such as the Pyramids of Giza, are constantly hounded and pursued by young men aggressively selling tours, souvenirs, carriages, or camel rides.
The issue of sexual harassment in Egypt received international prominence during and after the 2011 revolt that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak when women were harassed, groped, and in some cases beaten and sexually attacked during enormous anti-government rallies.
Women motivated by the #MeToo movement have spoken up about the issue on social media in recent years. Sexual harassment is now punishable by up to five years in jail, according to the authorities. They have also increased their efforts to curb harassment and aggressive touting at tourist attractions.
