Two Iranian air force pilots were killed Tuesday when their F-7 training plane crashed in Isfahan province, south of Tehran, the official broadcast said.

According to the broadcaster’s website, “the aircraft’s two pilots were killed in the accident that occurred this morning in Anarak district.”

According to the provincial deputy governor Mohammad-Reza Jannessari, the fighter plane was on a training flight when it crashed.

He went on to say that the reason had been investigated.

In recent years, the Iranian air force has had multiple mishaps. Officials have expressed concerns about obtaining replacement parts to keep the ageing fleet flying.

An Iranian F-5 fighter jet crashed in a residential neighbourhood of Tabriz in February, killing three persons, including the two-man crew.

Iran has mostly Soviet-era Russian MiG and Sukhoi fighter jets, as well as several Chinese aircraft, notably the F-7.

Its fleet also includes several American F-4 and F-5 fighter planes from before the 1979 Islamic revolution.
