After rushing into a Texas elementary school on Tuesday, a teen gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults, the latest case of gun-fueled mass murder in the United States and the country’s bloodiest school shooting in nearly a decade.
The 18-year-old suspect, who was shot and killed by police, had also slain his grandmother before fleeing the scene, wrecking his getaway car, and going on a violent rampage at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, some 80 miles (130 kilometres) west of San Antonio. The reason for this was not immediately apparent.
The gunman, who was wearing body armour, was seen by law enforcement authorities. On Tuesday, a teen gunman stormed a Texas elementary school and killed at least 19 children and two adults, the latest case of gun-fueled mass murder in the US and the country’s worst school shooting in nearly a decade.
The 18-year-old suspect assassinated his grandmother before fleeing the scene, destroying his getaway car, and embarking on a violent rampage at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles (130 kilometres) west of San Antonio.
The cause for this was not obvious at first. Sergeant Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported on CNN that he emerged from his crashed truck with a rifle and “engaged” the perpetrator, who still managed to charge into the school and open fire.
A clearly distraught US President Joe Biden spoke from the White House hours later, urging Americans to stand up to the politically powerful US gun lobby, which he blamed for stalling the implementation of tighter “common-sense” guns safety rules.
