According to the article, a 57-year-old lady from Tamil Nadu, India, pretended to be a man for 30 years in order to raise her daughter “in a patriarchal environment.”

Petchiammal married and lost her spouse only 15 days later. She was 20 and pregnant at the time. Petchiammal gave birth to a girl a few months later.

She had to start working to make ends meet, but coming from Katunayakkanpatti village’s strong patriarchal society, it was not an easy feat.

People in the community began to harass her and pass sexual comments at her when she began to work in different places such as hotels, tea shops, and construction sites.

Petchiammal then chose to change her name to Muthu and wear a shirt and lungi instead of her previous dress.

“It’s been over 20 years since we moved to Kattunayakkanpatti. “Only my closest relatives at home and my daughter knew I was a woman,” she told Times Now.

Wherever she worked, she was referred to as “annachi,” a male name.

The 57-year-old said she worked a variety of professions to help her daughter have a stable future.

“Muthu quickly became my identity, which was reflected on all of my documents, including my Aadhaar, voter ID, and bank account,” she explained.
