Bill de Blasio, the former mayor of New York City, has indicated an interest in running for Congress. As a result of a redistricting plan, seats have become available in Brooklyn and Manhattan, forcing the politician to take advantage of the situation.

He announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he has created an exploratory committee for the 10th Congressional District in New York. In addition to Lower Manhattan, the region covers the Brooklyn neighbourhoods of Park Slope and Borough Park.

“Our neighborhoods need help as we recover from Covid. Our nation needs help as democracy is threatened and working people struggle. I am ready to serve to continue the fight against inequality. Today I am forming an Exploratory Committee for the new #NY10,” de Blasio wrote.

At least four Democratic state legislators have declared their candidacy, according to Politico: Senators Simcha Felder and Brad Hoylman, as well as Assemblymembers Jo Anne Simon and Robert Carroll. De Blasio stepped down as mayor at the end of 2021.

In 2019, he ran for President for the first time. He’s been on MSNBC and written on the Biden administration since leaving government. He was open about his personal failings and how the President can grow better as a result of them in an op-ed he published for The Atlantic earlier this month titled “Joe Biden Can Learn From My Mistakes.”

“As the mayor of New York City, I had one of the loudest megaphones in the country, and I failed to use it properly. Biden’s bully pulpit is a thousand times more powerful. He needs to use it to show that he truly empathizes with everyday Americans on the issues they care most about, such as inflation, public safety, and affordable health care.”

De Blasio faced heavy scrutiny for how he handled everything from crime to Covid during his final two years as Mayor, which resulted in low approval ratings. He pondered running for Governor again this year, but decided against it.
