Building-sized asteroid safely flew by earth last night
According to Space, an asteroid the size of a building passed by our planet on Monday night at a safe distance.
The asteroid’s official designation is 467460. (2006 JF42). According to data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, it passed at a safe distance of 14 earth moons from the Earth.
In terms of distance, the asteroid would have passed our planet by 5.7 million kilometres.
While space is teeming with drifting pebbles, NASA maintains a close eye on the ones that circle our planet.
The Planetary Defense Coordination Office of NASA continues to survey the sky with powerful telescopes, reporting notable flybys.
Because scientists have gotten adept at detecting pebbles going by us, there are frequent reports of them passing by. Flybys are becoming easier to forecast as technology advances.
