The Cambodia Ministry of Tourism issued a regulation on Tuesday prohibiting the sale and consumption of all sorts of alcohol for two days, the day before and the day of the commune election.

The measure is intended to assist in guaranteeing that the commune election on June 5 is free and fair, free of violence, threat, intimidation, and situations that might be exacerbated by alcohol use, according to the direction from Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary of state Tith Chantha.

“The owners or managers of karaoke parlors, night clubs, discotheques, and beer gardens across the country must suspend their businesses for two days on June 4 and 5, 2022,” he said.

“The owners or managers of all tourism businesses that offer food services must also stop selling and serving alcoholic drinks for the two days mentioned above,” he added.

He asked tourist agency heads across Southeast Asia to spread the word about the restriction to all owners and administrators of those entertainment venues and enterprises.

Meanwhile, according to a statement, the administration has decided in principle to enable workers to take three fully paid days off for the elections.

According to the National Election Committee, seventeen political parties will run in the next elections, with Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition Candlelight Party being the main contenders (NEC).

The elections will select commune leaders and councillors for the country’s 1,652 communes, according to the NEC, who said that around 9.2 million eligible voters, or 87.9 percent of the entire population of 18 years old and above, are anticipated to vote.

The fifth mandate of commune elections, held every five years, is viewed as a barometer of the party’s strength ahead of the national elections in 2023.
