Police in Canada’s largest city, Toronto, fatally shot a man armed with a rifle on Thursday, according to local media, in an event that led numerous schools to close just two days after a deadly attack on a US elementary school.

Bystanders in an eastern Toronto area notified police to the man’s presence, and the specifics of what happened next were not immediately apparent.

The suspect, identified as a male in his late teens or early twenties, was killed after he “confronted” responding officers, according to local police chief James Ramer, who did not elaborate.

A “police firearm” was “discharged” when authorities spotted the individual, according to the police force’s Twitter account.

Preliminary evidence suggested that two police officers discharged their firearms, and the suspect was declared dead at the scene, according to a spokesman for the Special Investigations Unit.

It’s unclear if the man was holding the weapon when he was shot by police.

Ramer said he couldn’t say much more since the event was still being investigated.

He stated, “There’s no threat to public safety.”

“Due to the proximity to a school, I certainly understand the trauma and how traumatic this must have been for staff, students and parents, given recent events that have happened in the United States,” the chief added.
