Democrats vote for Abortion legalization for up to 9 months; face severe backlash

Severe criticism is being faced by senate democrats in the wake of abortion legalization. Last week they voted for a bill that allows abortion upto 9 months of pregnancy.

A bill was put forward by Women’s Health protection act which stated that abortion access would be given nationwide and there would be few limitations and requirements. This bill although backed by 49 democrats was failed to pass.

The measure’s text declared that the access of abortion at any point in pregnancy would be given. Also, the permission for healthcare professionals to perform abortions in case there is a danger to mother’s life or health, was stated. Healthcare professionals already agreed to pass such a bill.

This bill was introduced earlier by Sen Richard Blumenthal and included the wellbeing of patient’s psychological and emotional wellbeing. This was similar to a bill named Doe v Bolton which was a companion case to Roe v wade.

Pro choice Republicans tried to push a notion that this bill would go against the Religious freedom restoration act. They also said that congress have never passed a bill that threatened the religious liberties.

Collins said that apart from religious liberties this bill would also be against Affordable care act measures that give doctors a right to not perform abortions due to moral or religious views.

While Pro life and Pro choice debates continued, Nora Keefe (DSCC spokesperson) said that Republicans are just stressed and anxious to not rob women of their rights over bodies and pass a bill that goes against Americans views. She also claimed that the agenda of Republicans to distract voters by putting out women protection act so they can ban abortions won’t be succeeded.
