During a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces a day after an attack on water pumping infrastructure east of the Suez Canal, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi urged law enforcement to finish the cleaning of territories in Sinai of terrorist groups.

El-Sisi emphasized the need of continuing to undertake all security measures that lead to the eradication of terrorism in all of its manifestations.

The tragedy, which murdered 11 security employees, including an officer, and injured five others, was discussed at the conference. El-Sisi extended his condolences to the families of those slain and injured and applauded the Egyptian Armed Forces’ efforts to battle terrorism and its origins in the Sinai Peninsula.

He also praised the security services for their efforts in completing massive national projects in collaboration with other state institutions, underlining the country’s gratitude for the sacrifices made by the members of the armed forces and police to ensure its security.

The Egyptian Armed Forces’ military spokesperson, Col. Arkan Harb Gharib Abdel Hafez, acknowledged in a statement that a group of terrorists known as “takfiri” assaulted a water pumping station in western Sinai on May 7, fighting Egyptian forces stationed on the ground and killing 11.

Condemnations for the incident flowed in from around the Arab world, with several of Egypt’s neighbors expressing support for Cairo in its fight against terrorism.
