The EU and the UK have blamed Russia for a hack that knocked out internet connectivity for tens of thousands of satellite modems in Ukraine.

The attack took place start of Russia’s invasion on February 24.

One of the most significant cyber incidents of the war in Ukraine is a cyberattack on a satellite network owned by Viasat, a US-based telecommunications company.

It interrupted communications in Ukraine an hour before Russia’s full-scale invasion.

There were hundreds of wind turbines in Germany relying on the satellite network being knocked offline as a result.

The European council stated, “This unacceptable cyberattack is yet another example of Russia’s continued pattern of irresponsible behavior in cyberspace, which also formed an integral part of its illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.”

According to Ukrainian cyber official, Victor Zhora, it was “a really huge loss in communications in the very beginning of the war.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK stated that “new UK and US intelligence suggests” Russia was behind the Viasat network attack.

US officials are looking at the incident as a possible Russian state-sponsored cyberattack.
