Five gold miners died when a landslide buried them while excavating gold on the banks of a river in central Bolivia, according to local officials.
According to the police report, the victims of the tragedy in the village of Huajchamayu, in the town of Cocapata, in the central Cochabamba department, varied in age from 20 to 40 years old.
“The tragedy occurred on Wednesday. The doctors at the Falsuri Health Center received the information at midnight Wednesday and, along with the police, went to the site, where they verified the existence of five bodies,“ according to the regional police commander.
The victims were retrieved early Thursday, said Eleuterio Galindo, secretary of mining for the Cochabamba municipality, adding that other workers managed to flee before the landslide hit.
