Guinean ex-leader Alpha Conde boarded an aircraft for Turkey on Saturday, according to authorities, after the junta that deposed him authorised his trip overseas for medical treatment.

The junta’s ruling council claimed the 84-year-old Conte was permitted to fly out of respect for his “dignity and integrity” and for “humanitarian considerations.”

Conde has “medical appointments” overseas, according to the National Rallying Committee for Development, without going into information about his health, where he will be treated, or how long he would be out of the country.

Conde, however, boarded a flight heading for Turkey at Conakry airport in the morning, according to an airport management official and a police officer. They went on to say that the former leader looked to have fled on his own.

Guinea began a judicial inquiry into Conde and seven other former senior officials earlier this month for murder, torture, kidnappings, looting, and rapes.

After 11 years in charge in the poor former French colony, army officers led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya deposed him in September.

Conde drew harsh criticism for proposing a new constitution in 2020 that would allow him to seek for a third presidential term. He was first imprisoned before being permitted to travel to the UAE for medical treatment in January, coming home in early April.

The junta pronounced Conde “truly free” on April 22, although he has not been seen in public since.
