13 people have died in India’s eastern state of Bihar in the last five days after reportedly imbibing fake whiskey, according to local media on Thursday.

The killings are said to have occurred in the south Bihar districts of Aurangabad and Gaya.

Since the state’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, banned the sale and use of alcohol, Bihar has been a “dry state” for several years. However, the state has seen an increase in the illicit sale of liquor imported from surrounding states and illegally sold in Bihar by the liquor mafia.

Over the phone, officers at Madanpur and Salaiya police stations claimed they are investigating the case, but declined to say how many people had died so far.

According to media sources, the majority of the sufferers complained of vomiting, stomach aches, and low vision.

“A liquor consignment arrived from the neighbouring state of Jharkhand and distributed in Madanpur, Salaiya and Gaya district’s Aamas area. The sale of the liquor is currently underway and the villages of the region are becoming victims of it,“ according to Zee News.

Meanwhile, after mass killings in Aurangabad and Gaya, the National Human Rights Commission of India has sent a notification to the Bihar government.
