Both governments said they had discovered one affected individual who had recently travelled; but Israel said it was looking into more possible instances.

In the recent outbreak in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia, more than 80 cases have been confirmed.

Monkeypox is particularly widespread in Central and West Africa’s rural areas.

Scientists were surprised by the outbreak, but monkeypox does not transfer easily between humans; and the risk to the general population is considered low.
Most people recover in a few weeks after contracting the sickness.
