Joe Biden took a jab at Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, suggesting that comedian Trevor Noah would not be imprisoned for mocking the US president.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to turn this over to Trevor now, strap myself into my seat,” Mr Biden said in his introduction to Mr Noah at the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner, adding, “And, Trevor, the really good news is: now you get to roast the President of the United States and, unlike in Moscow, you won’t go to jail.”

It’s worth noting that Mr. Biden was referring to jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is one of Mr. Putin’s most vocal detractors.

It is suspected that the Kremlin attempted to kill a prominent Russian opposition figure with the Novichok nerve weapon in 2020.

Mr Navalny became unwell on a journey from Siberia to Moscow at the time after being poisoned.

He was then airlifted to Germany for immediate medical attention. As he healed, he stated that he planned to return to his native country.

Mr Navalny, however, was seized and held upon his return to Russia. He was found guilty of fraud and embezzlement and sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security prison.

But, via his attorneys and sympathisers, he continues to speak out against Mr. Putin.

Furthermore, the Kremlin diverted condemnations from over 50 countries, including the US, by claiming that Mr Navalny was poisoned with a Soviet-developed nerve toxin after arriving in Germany.
