Three meteorology students have perished in a car accident on their way back from a storm-chasing trip in Kansas.

Nicholas Nair, 20, Gavin Short, 19, and Drake Brooks, 22, all of whom were students at the University of Oklahoma, died at the scene.

The collision occurred just hours after Mr. Nair and Mr. Short posted videos of a tornado passing over a highway on Twitter from Herington, Kansas.

Their vehicle hydroplaned and was hit by a tractor-trailer while driving back to Oklahoma in stormy weather.

They were traveling southbound in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, just across the Kansas border, when the accident occurred.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, their Volkswagen Tiguan skidded on the water, became stuck in the outside lane of traffic, and was then hit.

The tractor-trailer driver has been released from the hospital.

The three meteorology students were reportedly part of a larger group of University of Oklahoma students who traveled to Kansas over the weekend to chase the tornado.

Storm chasing entails tracking and following a tornado or hurricane while taking photos, videos, and weather records.

Some storm chasers do it for research or media coverage, while others do it for the thrill of it.
