Scientists are baffled by the sudden development of cases and the uncertainty around how and where people caught the virus, with sexual contact viewed as a possible route of transmission.

A scientist has called the current epidemic of monkeypox cases in the UK “unusual,” while others have warned that there are “gaps in our knowledge” about the disease’s recent spread.

Health officials are looking into the connections between four new cases discovered in London and the northeast of England, none of which have been linked to the UK Health Security Agency’s prior three infections.

The danger to the broader UK population is low, according to UKHSA, because it is a relatively mild, self-limiting viral disease that does not easily spread between people.

Scientists are puzzled by the quick rise of cases and the uncertainty around how and where the patients caught the virus, with sexual contact being viewed as a possible route of transmission.

“This outbreak of monkeypox in the UK is unprecedented, and it has prompted immediate public health response,” said Jimmy Whitworth, an international public health professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
