A guy confesses to murdering a stranger outside a bar in Huntingdon with a single punch.

On January 30, about 01:30 GMT, Jake McFarlane, 22, hit Ian Clitheroe, 50, outside the Samuel Pepys pub in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

Mr. Clitheroe was transported to the hospital for treatment but died on February 3rd.

McFarlane, of Bernard Close, Huntingdon, fled the scene before the emergency services arrived. He was sentenced to two years in prison for manslaughter at Peterborough Crown Court.

McFarlane and a buddy confronted Mr. Clitheroe, whom they thought was fighting with a lady outside the pub, according to Cambridgeshire Police.

The 22-year-old hit his victim, who fell to the ground.

According to Cambridgeshire Police, he was detained the next day at 13:00 GMT at Huntingdon train station after purchasing a single ticket to Norwich.

Officers discovered £710 in cocaine and a set of digital scales with white powder residue on them.

McFarlane also admitted to one count of having Class A narcotics with the intent to supply.

He was sentenced to 21 months in prison for that offense, which would run concurrently with his manslaughter term.

Mr. Clitheroe’s family paid homage to “a larger-than-life, kind, loving guy with a heart of gold,” saying “the impact and tragedy, senseless way of his death resonates with us every day.”

“We are relieved that Jake McFarlane is now rightly behind bars and no longer a threat to society, although his sentence in no way compares to our life sentence,” they added.

Det Insp Dale Mepstead said: “This case shows the tragic consequences just one punch can have.

“Every weekend in towns and cities across the country, police deal with alcohol-fuelled violence.

“I hope this case will make people think about their actions.”
