Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa paid a joint appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Saturday.

Costa is the most recent in a long line of Western politicians and officials to visit Kyiv after Ukrainian forces drove Russian troops out of the city’s environs.

Zelensky expressed his optimism that Portugal would support Ukraine’s bid to join the EU.

Zelensky said, “We hope that the state vote of Portugal will be in support of our country on the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union during the consideration of this issue at the European Council in June.”

According to Zelensky’s office, the two leaders also addressed military aid to Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, war crimes, and how Portugal could assist in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
