MANILA: An offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 rocked Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines on Thursday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The magnitude was first reported as 6.2 before being revised to 5.7 by the institution. The quake struck at a depth of 96 kilometers, roughly 136 kilometers southeast of Tarragona town in Davao Oriental province, at 5:41 a.m. local time (2141 GMT Wednesday).

On Mindanao Island, the tremor was detected in nearby regions. According to the institute, the tectonic quake would create aftershocks but not harm.

Because of its location in the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” the Philippines experiences regular earthquakes.
