Toronto police shot man seen with a weapon near school

Police in Canada’s largest city, Toronto, fatally shot a man armed with a rifle on Thursday, according to local media, in an event that led numerous schools to close just two days after a deadly attack on a US primary school.
Bystanders alerted police to the man’s presence in an eastern Toronto neighborhood, and the details of what happened next were unclear.
However, local police Chief James Ramer informed reporters that the suspect, described as a male in his late teens or early twenties, was killed after he “confronted” responding cops, without going into further detail.
According to the police department’s Twitter account, after authorities located the individual, a “police firearm” was “discharged.”
According to a Special Investigations Unit spokesman, early evidence indicated that two police officers discharged their firearms, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the site.
It was unclear whether the man was holding the firearm at the time cops shot him.
Ramer stated that he was unable to provide additional information because the incident was being investigated.
“There is no danger to public safety,” he stated.
“Because of the proximity to a school, I certainly appreciate the trauma and how upsetting this must have been for staff, students, and parents, especially given recent events in the United States,” the chief continued.
A shooting at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday killed 21 people, including 19 children and two instructors.
