5.8 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesian province of Mamuju

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the primary international agencies that monitor seismic activity globally, recorded a magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Mamuju, Kabupaten Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia, only 13 minutes ago.

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres under the epicentre at 1:32 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022.

As seismologists evaluate data and update their estimations, or as other agencies issue their reports, the actual magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the quake may be altered in the coming hours or minutes.

The earthquake was eventually classified as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake by France’s Reseau National de Surveillance Sismique (ReNaSS).

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.7 earthquake, and RaspberryShake’s citizen-seismograph network reported a magnitude 5.6 earthquake.

As per preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by a large number of people in the epicentre area. Other than goods tumbling from shelves, shattered windows, and so on, it should not have caused substantial damage.

The tremor should have been felt as light shaking in Mamuju (population 15,000), which is 39 kilometres from the epicentre.

Weak shaking was possibly detected in Majene (pop. 37,700), which is 88 kilometres from the epicentre, and Polewali (pop. 58,200), which is 107 kilometres away.
