According to The Guardian, an 83-year-old man sailed solo across the world’s largest body of water, the Pacific Ocean, becoming the world’s oldest person to do it.

Kenichi Hories, dubbed “Japan’s most famous yachtsman,” expressed concern that his age would prevent him from breaking the record.

He arrived in the waters of the Kii peninsula in western Japan at 02:39 a.m. after spending more than two months at sea.

“Don’t let your dreams just stay as dreams,” the octogenarian advised the crowd. Have a goal and work toward it, and a lovely life will be yours.”

He set out on his expedition on March 27 from San Francisco, California, in his 19-foot-long aluminium boat, the Suntory Mermaid III. His ship weights 990 kilogrammes and readily accommodates his 5 foot frame.

During the trek, he said he spoke to his family once a day to keep them updated on his safety.

Horie is not physically prepared for the journeys he does. He claims to eat well and not drink excessively.

This was not the first time the old man had done anything like this. He finished the expedition when he was 23 and travelled from Japan to California without stopping.

He says of his first time, “I had the confidence that I would make it.”

However, he admitted that for survival he had only rice and canned food.
