TIRANA: Albania on Thursday mourned the death of former President Bujar Nishani, who died at the age of 55 after suffering serious health issues as a result of Covid-19.

The administration announced June 2nd as a national day of mourning for the country’s sixth president on Wednesday.

During Nishani’s funeral, Albania’s national flag will be flown at half-mast.

Officials will pay tribute to Nishani in the presidential complex in Tirana, where Albanian President Ilir Meta will deliver a speech.

Nishani died on Saturday in Germany, where he had been admitted to a hospital for more specialist care.

In recognition of his contributions to the country, Meta bestowed upon Nishani the National Flag Title, the highest state title.

Former President Bujar Nishani, who served in office for five years from 2012 to 2017, was previously a politician for the country’s center-right Democratic Party.
