A congressional subcommittee looking into the assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, said on Wednesday that it had subpoenaed Pat Cipollone, the White House counsel for former President Donald Trump, to testify about Trump’s actions on the day of the melee.
Following dramatic public testimony on Tuesday from a former White House aide, who claimed Cipollone had warned her they could be charged with “every crime imaginable” if Trump visited the Capitol on January 6 after delivering a fiery rally speech to his supporters, a subpoena was issued for Cipollone’s deposition.
The panel said in a statement: “The Select Committee’s inquiry has discovered evidence that Mr. Cipollone regularly voiced legal and other concerns about President Trump’s behaviour on January 6th and in the days that prior.”
The committee stated: “Any reservations Mr. Cipollone may have regarding the institutional prerogatives of the post he previously held are clearly overcome by the necessity of his evidence.”
For a comment, Cipollone could not be reached right away.
Trump intended to leave the rally for the Capitol, and according to Cassidy Hutchinson, a staffer for Trump’s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, when the Secret Service refused to bring him there, where tens of thousands of his supporters rioted, he grabbed the wheel of the presidential SUV.
If Trump visits the Capitol on January 6, Hutchinson claims Cipollone warned her, “We’re going to get charged with every criminal imaginable.”
“”We need to prevent this from happening; it would be a terribly bad idea for us,” I said. We will be in grave legal trouble if we visit the Capitol on that particular day “Citing Hutchinson’s testimony, Cipollone warned.
though, the investigation was questioned about the measures it had taken to support Hutchinson’s claim that Trump had fought with Secret Service members.
