The Belarusian army is unable to invade Ukraine on its own, without the assistance of Russian forces, but the Russian government reserves a third of its battalion tactical units.
That is what the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (GUR MO) claims,
Vadym Skibitsky, the agency’s spokesman, claims that as of right now, the Belarusian army rotates only seven battalions close to the Ukrainian border.
Currently, various special operations troops from Belarus and Russia participate in coordinated drills to practise operations on Ukrainian soil. These exercises are occurring all along the border.
A similar training schedule was observed during all prior combined exercises of the Russian and Belarusian troops, according to Skibitsky. The intelligence spokesman stated that as a result, sabotage and reconnaissance organisations pose the greatest threat at the moment.
The GUR estimates that the establishment of a strike group will take three to four weeks given the knowledge gathered from March to April, of which two to three weeks will be required to assure the return of Russian army units to Belarus.
At the same time, it is deemed “very unlikely” that the Belarusian military forces will launch an aggressive operation.
According to intelligence, there are currently 4,000–6,000 Belarusian units rotating around the border. There are also some 1,500 Russian troops, including an aviation force, an air defence unit, special operations elements, and missile forces.
As previously reported, citing Ukrainian intelligence, Russia would attempt to entice Belarus into the conflict with Ukraine by carrying out a number of false flag operations that target civilians and infrastructure sites in Belarus. In order to accomplish this, Russian sabotage units had entered the city of Mozyr in Belarus while disguised as citizens.
As the Russian Federation begins its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Belarus continues to support it with its resources. In particular, the Russians launched a significant missile and bomb attack on the territory of Ukraine over the course of Saturday night, some of the missiles coming from Belarus.
