The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso on Wednesday, proclaimed a 30-day state of emergency in four provinces: Azuay, Imbabura, Sucumbios, and Orellana, alleging an escalation in violence during an indigenous protest.
In a decree from the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency, Lasso made this statement after violence, which often goes along with protests, disrupted social order by attacking reserved areas, putting people’s safety at risk, and stopping the flow of medicine and food.
The Armed Forces and the National Police will be deployed in the four provinces in order to ensure social order and public safety.
On Wednesday, the state of emergency will make it harder for people to get together and form groups, and there will be a curfew at night.
In Orellana and Sucumbios, the entire region containing oilfields and oil-producing facilities has been designated a “security zone.”
This was the third time the president of Ecuador had declared a state of emergency since the statewide demonstration began on June 13.
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), the largest indigenous group in South America, called for the demonstration. It wants a number of economic and social changes, such as a 40-cent drop in the price of fuel and gasoline.
The Ecuadorian National Police say that six people have died and 150 people have been arrested for different kinds of violence.
In fights with protesters, 228 police officers were hurt, and 11 police cars and 11 police stations were destroyed.
