A car bomb exploded in the motorcade of a high-ranking security officer in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden on Wednesday afternoon, according to a government official.

“The car bomb blast hit the convoy of General Saleh Al-Sayd, commander of the Security forces in the neighbouring southern province of Lahj when his motorcade was passing through a main street near Aden’s airport,” a local government source stated on condition of anonymity.

The explosion reportedly killed at least five guards and two civilians and wrecked an armoured vehicle in the official’s convoy, according to the source.

As per the source, the security commander who was clearly the primary target evaded the attack since he was seated in another armoured vehicle.

Following the attack, local security officers were strongly deployed across the residential area of Khormakser, where the explosion happened, and roads were shut.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. Similar instances occurred recently in Aden and elsewhere in the war-ravaged Arab country, targeting local government and security officials.
