A blast killed four people in the Cartagena del Chaira town of Colombia in the Caqueta department, according to the Colombian government.

At approximately 10:30 this morning, there was an explosion, a terrorist attack against a police patrol that was circulating in the sector. The victims were civilians travelling in a motorcar and on motorcycles,” Edilberto Molina Hernandez, the mayor of Cartagena del Chaira, stated.

“The cowardly attack (…) which claimed the lives of four people, including a minor, is an attack against all Colombians,” Defense Minister Diego Molano said on Twitter.

A driver, a mother, and a three-year-old child were killed, with a 57-year-old lady succumbing to her injuries later.

As per authorities, two persons were injured and taken to local medical clinics.

The attack, according to Molano, was carried out by the Jorge Briceno Suarez structure of former guerrilla group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) dissidents.

He also stated that he has ordered the Army and the National Police to launch the appropriate efforts to apprehend and prosecute the attackers.

As per the Ombudsman’s Office, Cartagena del Chaira is one of the localities at risk of attacks during the country’s electoral process, which begins on June 19 with the second presidential round.
