TORONTO: Indian and Canadian foreign ministers spoke by phone on Wednesday ahead of a possible bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian colleague Justin Trudeau later this month.

That meeting has not yet been confirmed, but if it happens, it will take place on the sidelines of either the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Kigali, Rwanda, or the G7 Summit in Germany.

It addressed a number of important global problems, including the Indo-Pacific and the situation in Ukraine following Russia’s February attack.

The ministers “affirmed the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region founded on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations,” according to a statement from Canada’s foreign ministry, Global Affairs Canada.

As per the statement, they also talked about Russia’s war on Ukraine and “the need for the international community to come together to restore global peace and security,” They also considered the conflict’s broader consequences, such as its impact on world food security.“

Surprisingly, Jaishankar also brought up the subject of extreme elements such as Khalistani separatist organisations like Sikhs for Justice using Canadian land (SFJ).

In his tweet, Jaishankar just stated, “Spoke about misuse of freedoms and the dangers of extremism.”
