A day after the United Arab Emirates expressed alarm over Tehran’s nuclear programme, Iran told the UAE that strengthening ties with its neighbours was a top priority, according to Iranian state media.

the UAE’s representative to the UN’s nuclear watchdog expressed his hope that Iran will cooperate with the organisation to reassure both the international community and the region regarding Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian “referred to the priority of neighbours in Iran’s foreign policy and urged for further consultation… to expand bilateral ties” in a phone chat with his UAE counterpart, according to official media.

After years of difficult relations, the UAE, a U.S. ally, started communicating with Iran in 2019.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington to revive a 2015 nuclear deal have stalled since March and Tehran has restricted the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ability to monitor the Iranian nuclear programme after a dispute with the U.N. watchdog.
