An Iranian official on Monday said that Iran has submitted an application to join the BRICS club of rising economies.
A representative for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that if Iran joined the BRICS group, which is made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, “it would be good for both sides.”
Separately, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Argentina has also submitted an application to join the group.
Officials from Argentina could not be reached immediately for comment.
In recent days, Argentina’s President, Alberto Fernandez, who is presently in Europe, has repeated his desire for Argentina to join BRICS.
“While the White House was thinking about what else to turn off in the world, ban or spoil, Argentina and Iran applied to join the BRICS,” Zakharova said on Telegram.
Russia has long sought deeper connections with Asia, South America, and the Middle East, but it has recently stepped up its efforts to withstand sanctions imposed by Europe, the United States, and other nations in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
