Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian early Wednesday morning during tensions in the volatile West Bank city of Jenin, according to Palestinian and Israeli officials.
As per the Palestinian health ministry, 25-year-old Mohammad Marei died from a chest bullet wound. According to the official Palestinian news agency, he was slain during an Israeli operation in the city.
The Israeli army stated that it conducted “counter-terrorism operations” overnight in multiple West Bank locations.
According to the army, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on forces in Jenin.
“A number of suspects also hurled explosive devices at soldiers, who responded with fire. A hit was identified,”the army noted, without commenting explicitly on the killing of Marei.
His murder occurred amid escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict violence.
Since late March, nineteen people, largely Israeli civilians within Israel, have been slain, primarily in attacks by Palestinians and Israeli Arabs.
Israeli security forces have been doing raids almost every day in the West Bank, especially in and around Jenin.
The UN says that 48 Palestinians have been killed, mostly in the West Bank.
This includes attackers and people suspected of being terrorists, as well as people who weren’t fighting, like Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli army fire while covering a raid in Jenin.
Since late March, three Israeli Arab attackers have also been eliminated.
