Italian FM charges own party with hindering Ukrainian support efforts

Luigi Di Maio, the foreign minister of Italy, has charged his party, the 5-Star Movement, with obstructing attempts to support Ukraine despite Russia’s escalating invasion.
While everyone desired peace, Mr. Di Maio asserted in a statement that the government must protect the values of democracy and freedom, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin was pursuing conflict. Di Maio claimed that members of his party’s 5-Star Movement were “hating” on him and causing problems for the government’s relationship with its EU allies.
“[This is] an immature attitude that tends to create tensions and instability within the government,” he said.
The remarks come as Mario Draghi, the prime minister of Italy, is up for an important vote in parliament on Tuesday about Ukraine; certain members of the 5-Star party want to restrict Italy from providing additional arms to Kiev.
According to reports, on June 16, in Kyiv, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The leaders emphasized that Italy, France, and Germany all in favour of giving Ukraine EU candidate status.
