Nepal cancelled two day weekly holiday

Nepal will restore a one-day weekly holiday this week after experimenting with Saturday-Sunday holidays for a month, an official has stated.

“Two-day public holidays in a week appeared to be impractical in Nepal,” said Fanindra Mani Pokharel, spokesman for the Ministry of Home Affairs to a Chinese news agency. “So the decision was rolled back after experimenting with it for a month.”

He claimed that the government must return to a single-day public holiday since two-day holidays have hampered service delivery to the public. Many government and commercial sector offices disobeyed the government’s two-day holiday order.

“Now a one-day public holiday once a week will be observed on Saturday,” Pokharel explained.

With effect from May 15, the government resolved to make Sunday a national holiday in order to reduce fuel usage, which has risen in recent months.

As per the Trade and Export Promotion Center, fuels are Nepal’s most important import, accounting for roughly 16 percent of total merchandise imports in the first ten months of the current fiscal year, which began in mid-July 2021.
