According to India Today, Harshit Srivastava of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was detained in Kanpur for posting abusive tweets about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

This occurred just days after violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh city, when BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma — who has since been suspended — made insulting statements about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The arrested leader is a member of the BJP’s Youth Wing and student council, and his tweets have since been removed.

Kanpur Police Commissioner Vijay Singh Meena commented on the development, saying: “His posts were offensive. He was arrested after police took swift action and filed a case under relevant sections.”

“The government’s position is unmistakable. “Anyone who seeks to incite a communal riot or disrupt social harmony will face unbiased and severe punishment,” the commissioner added.

Muslim countries reacted angrily to the BJP officials’ remarks, and Sharma and another BJP politician, Naveen Kumar Jindal, were suspended as a result.
