President Joe Biden applauded senators for reaching a bipartisan agreement on gun safety and encouraged Congress to enact it by Sunday.

However, Biden reacted to the framework on Sunday afternoon, just hours after Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., unveiled a draft of a gun-control bill that Republicans prepared to embrace.

“I want to express my gratitude to Senator Chris Murphy and his bipartisan group, particularly Senators Cornyn, Sinema, and Tillis, for their tremendous efforts in developing this legislation.

“Obviously, it does not go far enough, but it represents crucial steps in the right way.

The framework proposes legislation to ban straw purchases of weapons and promote and improve financing for school safety.

“We’re not going to bring up legislation that bans assault weapons or requires full background checks,” Murphy said. “People in this nation want us to make the change right now; they just don’t want the status quo to last another 30 years.”
