SMITHSBURG, Maryland shooting, Authorities said an employee opened fire at a manufacturing company in rural western Maryland on Thursday, killing three coworkers before the suspect and a state trooper were wounded in a gunfight.

Three people were found dead at Columbia Machine Inc. in Smithsburg, according to Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore, while a fourth person was gravely injured. At a press conference, the sheriff stated that the victims and suspect were all workers of the institution.

Mullendore identified the suspect as a 42-year-old male but refused to reveal his identity while criminal proceedings were being prepared.

The victims of the shooting were named as Mark Alan Frey, 50, Charles Edward Minnick Jr., 31, and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30. Brandon Chase Michael, 42, was the injured victim, according to Mullendore.

According to Maryland State Police Lt. Col. Bill Dofflemyer, three troopers met the suspect’s car and he opened fire when officers conducted a traffic stop. Troopers fired back, injuring the suspect. Authorities have refused to reveal the motivation.

“We’re still working with sheriff’s office on what happened and why it kept escalating,” Dofflemyer told reporters.
