Since early March, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station is under Russian authority. At the end of April, Grossi paid a visit to the now-defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant north of Kyiv. It was briefly controlled by Russian soldiers.

According to the chief of the UN nuclear watchdog, there is a “clear and present risk” to the safety, security, and safeguards at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station. The city is presently under Russian administration.

“At least five of the seven vital pillars of nuclear safety and security have been breached at the facility,” stated Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Grossi told the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors that he was “actively working to negotiate, organize, and lead an IAEA-led International Mission.” He took to the facility to “carry out vital nuclear safety, security, and safeguards activities at the site.”
