The US military hacker, Cyber Command, has initiates offensive cyber operations in support of Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion, according to the command’s chief.

The revelation highlights how critical projecting strength in cyberspace has been to the Biden administration’s efforts to avoid directly confronting Russia in a shooting war. Both in support of Ukraine’s defenses and to potentially dissuade Russia from undertaking cyberattacks against US infrastructure.

In an interview, Gen. Paul Nakasone said, “We’ve performed a series of operations throughout the full spectrum: offensive, defensive, [and] information operations.” The article’s accuracy was not disputed by a spokeswoman for the command, but he declined to elaborate on the command’s operations in Ukraine.

It’s a rare public acknowledgement of hacking operations by US military authorities, which are generally cloaked in secrecy.
