GREENWOOD: Three people were killed and two were injured after a man with a rifle opened fire at a food court at an Indiana mall on Sunday evening, and armed civilians returned fire, according to police.
Jim Ison, chief of the Greenwood Police Department, stated that the man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a weapon and multiple ammo magazines and began firing at the food court.
Ison stated during a press conference that a 22-year-old from nearby Bartholomew County who was legally carrying a pistol at the mall shot and killed the gunman.
Ison claimed four women and one man were shot. He didn’t know the victims’ gender or age.
The two injured, including a 12-year-old girl, are in stable condition.
Ison said police seized a suspicious backpack in a food court bathroom.
The shooting was reported at about 6 p.m.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” Ison said.
Mass shootings shook Americans in 2022. Schools, churches, grocery shops, and an Illinois Fourth of July parade have all become killing grounds. Individual deaths that rarely reach the headlines reveal America’s alarming murder rate.
Multiple agencies are helping with the inquiry.
Indianapolis Assistant Police Chief Chris Bailey stated, “We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country.”
Authorities reported no threat Sunday night.
Greenwood is a 60,000-person Indianapolis suburb. Mayor Mark Myers prayed for victims and first responders.
“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers added.
