US authorities fear China could declare a no-fly zone over Taiwan before Nancy Pelosi’s trip. This would scuttle Pelosi’s trip and exacerbate regional tensions.

The official however said China may reply by flying fighter jets into Taiwan’s air defense zone. No reply.

The Chinese embassy in Washington quoted a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman who opposed Pelosi’s travel when asked about airspace issues.

Biden said Wednesday that the military thinks Pelosi shouldn’t visit the self-governing island.

However, Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman Col. Dave Butler said decision-makers are “usually” briefed.

Butler: “We discuss enemy plans, logistics, and military readiness.” He wouldn’t say if Milley and Pelosi discussed Taiwan.

Pelosi said Thursday’s Taiwan vote is essential, but she won’t reveal her travel plans for security reasons. Pelosi received “word of mouth” that Biden acknowledged her visit, but she hadn’t heard from the President.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson said Pelosi’s trip “violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués.”
