The White House said on Thursday that Joe Biden, the president, tested positive for Covid.

Biden, 79, is exhibiting “minimal symptoms,” according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and has started taking Paxlovid to combat the illness.

Biden is completely immunised and has received two booster shots. At 79, he is the oldest person to ever hold the office of president.

“He has had two booster shots and is only showing very minor effects. He has started taking Paxlovid, according to a statement from the White House.

He will take a break at the White House while still performing all of his duties in full.

In addition to participating in his scheduled meetings at the White House this morning through phone and Zoom from his home, he has been in communication with members of the White House staff by phone this morning.”

First Lady Jill Biden disclosed that she had tested negative and would continue to follow the CDC’s recommendations about her schedule.

“I just spoke to him [Biden] a short while ago; he’s doing good. He’s doing well, Jill informed the media.

“I am aware that the symptoms are minimal. I wish they would stay that way. Speaking about the president’s Covid diagnosis, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated, “That was my experience.

In December 2020 and January 2021, the 79-year-old president received his first two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

He received two booster shots from Pfizer in March and September of 2022.

A day after visiting Massachusetts and Rhode Island to talk about climate change, Biden received a positive diagnosis.

The president also just got back from a Middle East trip that included discussions with foreign leaders in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

After Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive for the virus in late April, Biden’s positive test result came several months later.

Nearly 80% of Covid infections are caused by the highly contagious BA.5 omicron strain, which has persisted in the Washington, DC, area and throughout the country.

The BA.5 omicron subvariant is currently thought to be responsible for 77.9% of Covid cases in the US, according to the most recent Nowcast report made public by the CDC on Tuesday.

BA.4, another omicron subvariant, currently accounts for 12.8% of instances.

The BA.5 subvariant was identified in the first instance in late April, and by early July, it had taken over as the main strain of the virus.

In recent months, the virus has infected dozens of members of Congress, including Speaker Pelosi.
