Mario Draghi won a vote of confidence in the Italian Senate on Wednesday, but he was badly injured.

Even though he appealed for unity, MPs from the 5-Star movement, the largest party in Italy’s coalition government, the center-right Forza Italia, and the far-right League all skipped the vote.

Draghi is in command of a government that is fractured and about to fall apart. He however widely expected to step down.

In a tweet, Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio called the incidents “a black page for Italy.”

The country’s former leader, Enrico Letta, termed the result “madness.”

He stated on Twitter, “On this day of craziness, Parliament goes against Italy.”

Draghi had requested MPs to back the coalition government so a quick election however not needed.

He stated, “We need a new trust agreement that is sincere and true, like the one that has helped us change the country so far.”

The previous chairman of the European Central Bank remarked, “If we still want to stay together, we must renew this (national unity) bond with courage, altruism, and credibility.”

Matteo Renzi, a former prime minister, hailed Draghi for his work following the vote.

“As I informed the Senate, nothing will be the same after tomorrow,” he wrote.

Draghi has already promised to stand down. Last week, the 5-Star movement withdrew its support in a vote of confidence in parliament on a plan to cope with Italy’s high cost-of-living crisis.

He has declared he wouldn’t head a government without 5-Star.

Sergio Mattarella, the president of Italy, ordered Draghi to stay and find a solution when he wanted to resign.
