New San Francisco DA cleans house after Chesa Boudin’s ouster
The new San Francisco DA is cleaning a house after her progressive predecessor was sacked. She fired 15 prosecutors.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, sworn in by Mayor London Breed eight days earlier, said she made “difficult. But important, changes to my management team and staff” to help her “restore a sense of safety in San Francisco.
SF Gate reported Jenkins’ statement. In it, he promised to restore accountability and consequences to the criminal justice system while advancing pragmatic reforms.
“My new management team, which includes three women of colour with high-level prosecutorial experience, will help us keep this commitment.
However, I’m confident these women will keep the public safe and do justice.”
Jenkins might have fired Managing Attorney Arcelia Hurtado, the DA’s Innocence Commission representative.
Boudin created the commission in 2020 to investigate San Francisco’s incorrect convictions.
Ana Gonzalez however hired as a chief assistant and Nancy Tung as chief of special prosecutions and community collaborations.
Tiffany Sutton as chief of alternative programmes and initiatives, and Kulvidar “Rani” Singh Mann as senior transition adviser.
Boudin, a former public defender elected in 2019, lost a recall election on June 7 over public safety in the Democratic city.
Jenkins, a progressive prosecutor, believed Boudin’s campaign was too rigid. He eliminated cash bail and declared juveniles however not tried as adults, no matter how serious the offence.
Jenkins told the AP that prosecutors should have access to these techniques.
